  The Genetic Background of PKD

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease mainly has two genes, which are named respectively as PKD1 and pkd2.

PKD1 gene is located on the short arm of chromosome sixteenth (16p13.3), which encodes a protein called polycystic protein 1 (polycystin-1), PKD1 gene mutation caused by ADPKD accounted for 85%~90%; PKD2 located on the long arm of chromosome fourth (4q22), encoding a protein called polycystic protein 2 (polycysti-2), PKD2 gene mutation accounted for 5%~15%.

The age of clinical manifestations and renal failure of polycystic kidney disease caused by PKD1 gene mutation is than the PKD caused by PKD2 gene mutation for early ten years.
