Let’s learn about IgA nephropathy

  Let’s learn about IgA nephropathy

The disease is mainly caused by lots of IgA depositing in mesangial area due to recurrent colds and infection. And IGA deposits will result in immune inflammatory reaction, which cause damages on glomerular filtration membrane. Under such a condition, patients may suffer from some symptoms like proteinuria, swelling, itching, blood in urine, hypertension, etc. In order to control symptoms and reduce kidneys’ burden, foods that are recommended for IgA Nephropathy patients must be harmless for kidney. Basing on the principle, the following foods are suitable:

  1. High-quality protein diet

High-quality protein diet contains essential amino-acid which can provide necessary nutrition for our body and meanwhile produce less waste, such as lean meat, egg white, milk, and fish. However, protein intake should not be over 1g per kilo of body weight. And high quality protein intake should be above 50%.

  2. Regulate calories intake

Since patients have limited protein intake, the calories intake is mainly supplied by carbohydrates and fats. Calories intake should depend on your labor intensity. Adults on rest should consume 126-147KJ/kg of body weight to meet the activity needs.

  3. Low-salt food

If patients suffer from severe edema and hypertension, sodium intake should be below 2g per day and patients should follow a no salt diet.

  4. Low potassium diet

Under such a condition, eating too much high potassium foods will cause elevation of potassium level in blood, which is extremely harmful for heart. Therefore, in daily diet, IgA Nephropathy patients should choose low potassium foods such as alfalfa sprouts, cooked leeks, boiled collards, boiled eggplant, raw cucumber, raw iceberg lettuce and cauliflower and so on.
